The Mission

Matt Mitchell, a musical artist wanted to create a cohesive aesthetic for his new album "Mission." He believed that having a strong visual representation of the album, including an album cover, merchandise, a music video, and social media content, would help him connect with his audience and promote his music more effectively.

The Outcome

In collaboration with the client, we created an album cover for vinyl and CDs, a series of single covers and accompanying social media videos, t-shirt designs based on the album cover and concept, and an animated music video for one of the tracks on the album, all based on Matt's music and album meaning.

The Impact

The project had a significant impact on the client, as the album reached number 19 in the Official UK Rock Album Chart and number 37 in the Independent Album Chart.

The album was also stocked in record stores around the UK and tracks were played on BBC Radio 2 and added to Planet Rock Radio's playlist. Matt Mitchell has stated that the themes of the album are reflected in the artwork created by the Artist.

Before

Matt Mitchell is a singer-songwriter who fronts his own hard rock band. He released an album in 2019 and during the 2020 lockdown, he began writing his sophomore album 'Mission'.

The themes of the songs were inspired by this time and the idea of the migration journey that Arctic Tern birds embark on each year. He wanted the artwork for this record to reflect these concepts and convey a cohesive aesthetic for the album.

Matt Mitchell wanted to build on the success of his debut album with The Coldhearts and expand the band's fanbase with his new record. He reconnected with old bandmates from his musical past and collaborated with them to create the album. The collaboration extended to the album artwork when he asked us to work on the artwork for the campaign.

To achieve the goal of creating a cohesive aesthetic for Matt Mitchell's new album "Mission" that fit the narrative and themes of the album, we first attempted an illustrative approach, drawing out a landscape scene described by the client, similar to what was done for the previous album's artwork. However, with the client we decided that it wasn't the right fit for this project. Therefore, we opted for a cut-out paper-textured look for this piece of work. This led to creating other scenes in the same paper cut-out style, expanding the concept and look of the album.

Eventually, we created a music video using the same paper cut-out style and animation.

The Process
Images showing the process of how the cover art was created.

For the album "Mission," we created a cohesive aesthetic that incorporated a mountain scene with the sun and moon, Arctic Tern birds, and Egyptian snake imagery. The same style and themes were used for the singles from the album, booklet inside the album cover, T-shirts, a poster, and a stop-motion animated music video. The rollout went well, as the album reached number 19 in the Official UK Rock Album Chart and number 37 in the Independent Album Chart, and the album's themes were reflected in the artwork created.
